Switchback
for Violin and Piano

Switchback is an 11 minute ballet score for a film by Ballet Unleashed. Choreographed by Cathy Marston, the dance film features site-specific solos and duets, performed by six dancers from locations all over the world. The music describes the various stages of an individual's journey, drawing on Romantic, jazz, funk and modern styles. It is in six contrasting sections, ranging from delicate play to confident swagger, haunted soundscapes to tender melancholy.

It is a coming of age story about a young adult who leaves their home in order to chase their dream. The film follows their story as they set out on a quest to leave what is comfortable and embark on the unknown. Their story is echoed through the stories of other characters on the same journey, taking risks, getting lost and facing challenges to reach their goal. It was recorded by Sara Trickey (violin) and the composer (piano).
