Pianist
Iain studied piano at the Royal Academy of Music, London. He gained a DipRAM, the highest grade for a postgraduate, and was subsequently awarded an Associate (ARAM) for excellence in the profession. He works regularly with some of the country's leading singers, instrumentalists and choirs, as well as giving solo recitals. A selection of Iain’s performances can be viewed on YouTube Soloist Iain regularly gives solo recitals across the UK and abroad. His repertoire is unusual, equally embracing classical standard repertoire, contemporary, jazz and light music, as well as many arrangements of his own. He has recorded his arrangement of Elgar’s Concert Allegro for piano and orchestra with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, and his own solo piano arrangement of Elgar’s 2nd Symphony. Solo recordings also include his own compositions Fiesta! and a recording of piano arrangements Piano Songs. He performed at the London 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony. In 2018 he performed a Mahler Piano Series featuring most of Mahler’s symphonies in his own solo piano arrangements. Accompanist Iain is equally at home accompanying solo singers, instrumentalists and choirs. He has partnered in recital such singers as Lesley Garrett, John Mark Ainsley, Willard White. On BBC Television he has accompanied Bryn Terfel and Lesley Garrett. Venues have included the Wigmore Hall, Purcell Room, Kensington Palace and abroad. Chamber Ensembles Iain has performed with numerous instrumental ensembles in traditional Classical repertoire, contemporary music and jazz/popular styles. He has also made numerous arrangements for his own ensembles, such as piano trio, wind quintet and piano, and numerous duos. He recently formed his own group, the Art Deco Trio, to perform his jazz-inspired arrangements for clarinet, saxophone and piano. They have recorded a CD for SOMM Recordings of Gershwin song arrangements called Gershwinicity. Orchestral Piano Iain has performed as an orchestral pianist and keyboard player with the London Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Sinfonietta, the Britten Sinfonia, City of London Sinfonia, Aurora Orchestra and many others. Choral Accompaniment As a choral accompanist, Iain has worked with many of the most renowned choirs in the country. He was the official accompanist for the London Philharmonic Choir, and has performed on numerous occasions with the BBC Singers, Tenebrae, the London Symphony Chorus, BBC Symphony Chorus. He has given many broadcasts with choirs as well as having made numerous CD recordings, including as part of the award-winning English Choral Music series on the Naxos label with St John’s College, Cambridge. Repetiteur Iain worked extensively as a rehearsal pianist at the beginning of his career until 2011. This gave valuable insights into the orchestral repertoire, working with well-known conductors and soloists, and in performance with an orchestra. Conductors included Sir Simon Rattle, Sir Colin Davis, Sir Mark Elder, Sir Charles Mackerras, Eas-Pekka Salonen, Kurt Masur, Vladimir Jurowski, Yannick Nezet-Seguin, Edward Gardner, Marin Alsop, Vernon Handley, Edo de Waart, Thomas Ades, Christoph Eschenbach, Neeme Jarvi, Adam Fischer. |
