Pianoscape
for Ten Pianos
Pianoscape was composed for an unusual occasion, a delivery of ten pianos to the Royal Hospital School, Holbrook. The piece was designed to be easily performable by giving most part a single simple line, repeated with rhythmic freedom from the others. Each piano enters individually until all are playing at the climax, before the process is reversed. It is as if the listener is looking at a large picture, initially up close and only seeing tiny details. Then after stepping further and further back, the whole striking image is visible. The fadeout is like an emotional response to the image, darkened and pensive.
