Josef Strauss - Feuerfest
for Chamber Orchestra


Josef Strauss (1827–1870) was the brother of Johann Strauss II and Eduard Strauss, part of the musical dynasty that was wildly successful for their Viennese dance music. Feuerfest is a slow polka in the Polka Francaise model that was composed in 1869, with a title that means 'Fireproof'. It was commissioned by a manufacturer of safes, to advertise the safety of their products, and is notable for its use of the anvil.

Instrumentation: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Harp, 2 Percussion (anvil, snare drum), Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Violoncello, Double Bass (15 players)​
