Quiz Biz

Quiz Biz is an energetic symphonic celebration of the quiz genre, and quotes eleven TV quiz show themes. The music is often ebullient and humorous, but occasionally it conveys the anxiety and nervous tension of being on a quiz show, with the clock ticking down. The final section features the theme tune from The Chase, transformed into a vigorous fugue (fuga = chase). This eventually combines with the Blockbusters theme for a rousing finale.

Quiz Biz was commissioned by the London Soundtrack Festival. It was premiered on 21st March 2025 at Alexandra Palace Theatre London, by the BBC Concert Orchestra, conducted by Richard Balcombe. It was subsequently performed the next day at the Royal Festival Hall, London, by the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Ben Palmer.

Instrumentation: 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, bass clarinet, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, harp, drum kit, percussion, strings.
