Ponchielli - Dance of the Hours
for Chamber Orchestra Amilcare Ponchielli (1834-1886) composed his opera La Gioconda in 1876, and it was first performed at La Scala in Milan. The opera was a success, and features a ballet in Act 3 called the Dance of the Hours (Danza delle ore). The music depicts different hours of the day, through dawn, morning, twilight and night. It became known to a wide audience with its use in the 1940 Disney film Fantasia. Instrumentation: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Harp, 2 Percussion (timpani, triangle, glockenspiel), Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Violoncello, Double Bass (15 players) A larger string section can be used.
