Coleridge-Taylor: Danse Negre
for Chamber Orchestra Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912) was a British composer and conductor, best known for his choral cantatas, collectively titled The Song of Hiawatha. He was descended from African-American slaves, and composed a number of works that were inspired by African music. Danse Nègre is the final movement from his African Suite, Op. 35, originally for piano and composed in 1898. It is a lively, joyful and rhythmic work, full of energy and Romantic passion. This arrangement for chamber orchestra aims to create a full orchestral picture from fourteen players, enabling this work to be performed by smaller ensembles without enormous financial constraints. Instrumentation: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, 2 percussion (timpani, cymbals, triangle), violin I, violin II, viola, cello, double bass (14 players). More strings can be used as preferred. Available to purchase from Aria Editions here |
