Classical Converts
for Piano Solo

Classical Converts is a series of solo piano works in a jazz idiom. Each piece takes a familiar classical work and re-imagines it using jazz styles, with a wide range of moods: energetic, playful, melancholic and passionate. Valerie takes a Ride turns Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries into a sly rhythmic swing number. Jim’s Nobody is a cool and reflective version of Satie’s 1st Gymnopedie. Carmen’s Karma is an extended Fantasy on the three main arias sung by Carmen in Bizet’s opera, in the spirit of 19th century piano opera fantasies. It emphasises Carmen’s dangerous allure, and her tragic downfall. Elise’s Blues is a sad and dreamy memory of Beethoven’s Fur Elise. Stormin’ Summer is a fast and furious take on Vivaldi’s Summer from The Four Seasons.
